Jonathan - Harrogate has Leeds and York close by - as easy to get to as Kingston is for us but as it has enough variety in their town centre that people don't need to except for major purchases. I don't enjoy shopping in Richmond - too many cars and it doesn't have the spark it used to. I don't go to Sheen either. It's either Putney or Kensington or sometimes Wandsworth. I hate the large centres like Westfield. Why should we need to go to other (nearby) localities for shops and entertainment? There wouldn't be any need to go further afield if the mix of shops in Putney was as good as it used to be. This must come down to business rates and rents (greedy landlords as you point out) as reasons for retailers not wanting to be here even while many people buy online too (I do a mix of both). The excellent charity shop opposite me in Upper Richmond Road, which has been there for years, has just closed because a new lease (which they obv cannot afford) is required. A fine example of a greedy landlord. |
