I wasn't wishing to sound too unkind, as you say I fully accept the sentiment is well meant. I remember though that once in a speech when I had the Education portfolio I made a reference to 'brave disabled people'. One of the audience (in a wheelchair) came up to me afterwards and said (gently) that disabled people were just people, no braver or less brave than anyone else. When I chose to label her in that way without knowing a thing about her I was treating her differently when for all her life all she had ever wanted was to be seen as a person rather than as a disability and to be judged on her merits not her problems. It opened my eyes and since then I have tried to bear that in mind. |
