I suppose I am guilty of being patronising then - which was certainly not my intention. It is not such a big deal I'll grant you, but there is a lot of homophobic prejudice still around today; acceptance of same-sex relationships is far from universal even in this country and in many countries they are illegal. Even in one Commonwealth country (Uganda), homosexuality is punishable by life imprisonment and was almost made subject to the death penalty
I was actually offering congratulations on coming out. I'm sure there's a myriad of things wrong with that too, but to my mind if someone for whatever reason has felt under pressure to keep something natural and normal a big secret, a reduction or removal of that pressure, perceived or real, is something to celebrate every time someone does it. |
