But that's an argument for not trying to make government spending more transparent, Richard, because there will always be different ways of presenting data. You yourself have suggested two. Aside from the issue of welfare, the pie chart is broadly accurate and, even with the disagreements over welfare it does serve a useful purpose in showing what taxes are spent where. I'd actually like them to go further and start providing everyone with personal health, pension and social care accounts, which would again have a degree of contrivance about them, but if people could see what "society" is contributing to these three big (and increasing) pots there might be less "the government does nothing for me". Won't happen because that way lies hypothecation of taxation and no chancellor wants to be tied down by ring fences (even though that's what NI was always supposed to be).
