| Stuart King is, not for the first time, wrong. The Post Office are the freeholders, a fact which they seemed only to discover when pressed for more information by Wandsworth Council. The planning application for the site is likely to come before Committee in March. It shows the ground floor usage as retail/post office which is as per the current position. The Planning Applications Committee is quasi-judicial and may not in law be influenced in its decision as to whether or not to grant permission by the possibility of a redevelopment closing, either permanently or temporarilly, the post office facilities. The Post Office have issued a rather half-hearted undertaking to ensure that post office facilities remain in the area, both during and after any re-build. Supported by Justine Greening MP Wandsworth Council are pushing hard for greater certainty but have no control over post office closures. As you may remember Wandsworth Council did all it could to prevent the closure of post offices in the Lower Richmond Road and Putney Bridge Road, but without the slightest iota of support from the Labour Government which, unlike the Council, had the power to intervene. In reality it did nothing to help. The argument for closure was that there was a strong and vibrant post office on the Upper Richmond Road (!!!!!) |
