Those of us who were at today's Board meeting of the Wandsworth Primary Care Trust at Queen Mary's Hospital (in the morning) and then went to the residents meeting at the Spencer Arms, by Putney Lower Common (in the afternoon) which was addressed by WPCT representatives, will have been dismayed by what we learned. The WPCT Board has decided to not proceed with the Hospital redevelopment but to embark on a review of the plans for the new Primary Care Centre and all the options which might offer a better way of meeting Putney's future health service needs. So, in effect, the clock has been turned back five years and we are going to go through all the work again which had got us to where we were last week on this scheme. Putney Hospital closed in November 1999. It has been estimated that, since then, given the cost of keeping the building secure, all the fees paid to architects, lawyers, etc, salaries to WPCT staff and all the related costs, some £4M to £5M of Health Service money has been spent on arriving at where we were last week. Has all this now gone down the drain? At least, the review to be carried out by the WPCT between now and September, will keep the WPCT staff secure in their jobs! |
