As a Commons Conservator, I can give an assurance that NO common land has been taken for the enlargment of the bus turning area opposite the Green Man at the top of Putney Hill. The Conservators are not allowed, under their statutory powers, to dispose of the land they are responsible for. The green area which was taken over for the bigger area for the extra buses was owned by Wandsworth Council and managed by their Parks Department. I suspect that they were glad to get rid of it! It was an awkward little patch of public open space - even if the trees were an attactive element at the top of the Hill. In a few weeks, when the present construction works have been completed, it is proposed that a modest amount of new tree planting will take place on the limited spaces left that isn't taken up by buses, pavements, kiosks, toilet, bus shelter, seats, etc. |
