Boysie

'Anyway, hope the Iranian authorities stop murdering and punishing their people for their very reasonable expectations of a competently managed economy and country.'

A sentiment most on this Forum would support.

Unfortunately the expectation is unlikely to be realised.

There are no countries in the Middle East apart from Israel that can be described as competently managed either politically or economically.

Realising this expectation seems to be totally beyond them.

Hence their recourse to blaming Israel for their circumstances and relieving their frustration by attacking it.

I wonder if anyone has researched if these attitudes and circumstances have a religious foundation or a socio-historic one of tribal conflict.

Though I am not sure how much historical fact it was based upon but I was always struck by the impression of the region's conflicts in David Lean's great film 'Lawrence of Arabia'.

Here it implies that it took a white British Arabist to bring the feuding Arab tribes together to defeat the Ottoman Turks.

When this was achieved they then went back to reviving and re-instating their traditional animosities.
