Jane, that will teach me to skim quickly through to see if I want to respond to anything - I read that as "Michael, I can explain..." which made no sense! :-) To be honest I can't see any obvious reason for that discrepancy unless it's a timing difference. If someone did the stats immediately after final exams there might be many "economically inactive" between education and work? But really one for Radio 4's More or Less where they can dig into the underlying data. There is a concern that many entry level jobs - the ones taken by school leavers - are being taken over by AI so higher education might become more important - someone's got to write and maintain the other AI. Of course, someone's got to build the data centres fuelling AI ... but modular robotic manufacturing of data centre units will probably reduce those needed at a "nuts and bolts" level. (That's why Trump's plan to shift manufacturing back to the US will have limited success; the new factories will use more and more robotics ... let's be honest, even fast food outlets are using more and more self service kiosks!)
