| I think individuals on the left of the Labour Party such as the seven who were suspended in July after voting against the two child benefit cap have got genuine convictions. But the leadership and the broad mass of the parliamentary party have rejected socialism. Instead they now advocate a contradictory mixture of state capitalism and a market economy, promising to pour cash into a sovereign wealth fund while simultaneously promoting ‘growth’. All that they retain of their former left wing ideology is a belief that they are on the side of ‘working people’ and a vague sense that private enterprise is based on exploitation. Unfortunately their definition of ‘working people’ excludes millions of pensioners whose needs have been ignored while their prejudice against private enterprise has led to the increase in employers’ NI contributions which is slowing the growth they say they wish to promote. |
