'I expect that career diplomats must not be at all impressed'. Just as they were not when Peter Jay, economist and broadcaster was appointed the British Ambassador to the United States from 1977 to 1979 in the government of his father-in-law, Labour PM James Callaghan. In my view, our relationship with the US is a friendly one between countries with much in common. We are not likely to fight them or take a different stance to them on most geo-political issues. Improving trading relationships is key and here a good schmoozer is what is wanted. And whatever one thinks of him in other respects he is certainly that ! |
