Just to underline how utterly ineffective environmental regulation is, "no fines have been handed to water companies for illegal sewage overflows – despite the environment watchdog finding nearly 500 since 2020. The Environment Agency has identified 465 illegal sewage spills since that year, data obtained via a Freedom of Information request shows. A further 154 are under investigation as potentially illegal spills."
