More this line, Richard: "A review of bus services overseen by the Council has come up with some options that would see a service feed ASDA on the A3, the Alton estate and Priory Lane, then going to Barnes Station." A bus "serving the Alton estate and Priory Lane" means going through the Danebury barrier as that's the only way to get to Priory Lane from the Alton without some three point turns and going back on itself then around. But from that - and that was the first time any politician or council official anywhere had mentioned the opening of the barrier in public - Stuart King, Labour's then parliamentary candidate for Putney got in touch with council officers to find out what was going on, and this was his blog about the results: http://www.stuartking.host22.com/blog/2008/11/danebury-avenue-free-for-all.htm I still have the full reply from the council that is mentioned in this blog. That led to the first of many petitions and ballots of local residents, all of which showed overwhelming (read: divided, if you're the council) opposition to opening it over the next six years. I believe Justine was the instigator of the proposal, but whether or not she was, she was indisputably an advocate of it - keeping it alive when it should have been strangled at birth, wasting huge amounts of time of local people campaigning against it, and huge amounts of upset at the prospect of the Alton being turned into a massive rat-run. That's why now basking in the scheme's demise is unbecoming, to say the least. |
