| As someone long involved in rowing, I'm bound to mention the Embankment. The refurbishment work we've done at my club, Thames, got rid of the rather unattractive 1960s wood-cladding and has exposed some interesting brick and ironwork. I think our clubhouse now looks terrific. Our rivals London have a building of similar vintage (ours is 1879, theirs is 1860ish I think) which also has some merit. Its rather odd roof arrangement is due to the fact that it was originally intended to house a temporary grandstand up there on Boat Race days - that's no longer done, due to safety/weight concerns I think. Imperial College BC's 1930s modernist boathouse is the other most interesting one in my view, although I also like the clever reuse of JH Clasper's boatbuilding premises as Westminster School's boathouse. Clasper's name is picked out in the brickwork. |
