Last week's meeting of the Roehampton Forum discussed the issue of these playing fields. The Forum Chairman, Rev Jim McKinney, advised the meeting that the negotiations between Roehampton University and the council about the playing fields were ongoing and that no agreement had yet been reached. I see that in the Putney Society's June Bulletin, the Society's Open Spaces Panel Convener, Hugh Thompson, writes: "Concerns have been expressed about the council's sale of the Dover House playing fields to Roehampton University. Some may see this as the thin edge of the wedge, whereby the University uses the land to build more campus blocks. More likely would be a plan to turn the land into a state-of-the-art sports complex - which may give its students better sports facilities but will not enhance local open spaces". It would be good to have some advice from our elected West Putney councillors on just what is going on with these playing fields. I am sure that many people in Roehampton/west Putney would appreciate that. |
