Anatole is absolutely right. The Lease was signed in 2010 with Roehampton University. If you read the small print, they only have to remain as playing fields for ten years, ie. until 2020. They adjoin an are of prime real estate with nearby houses fetching millions - so what happens when the first ten years of the lease expires? My money's on "luxury housing". Ironically, these were the very playing fields offered as an alternative in the mendacious WBC press release, 9th August 2012, issued during the sale of Elliott School's playing fields (six tennis courts and a football pitch) to Barratt Homes. It was suggested that they are a five minute walk from the school - they are in fact a brisk 15-20 minute walk, taking valuable time from the limited sports curriculum available. The University charges ARK/Elliott for their use, and this effectively means that any local child who cannot afford the Roehampton Club fees, will have no access to free tennis courts, or indeed the football pitch. |
