Thank you, Ivonne, you make my point for me.

The RNLI is a highly esteemed charity whose lifeboats have saved countless people in British waters, not least on the tidal Thames.

Of course it’s not their job to check the immigration status of anyone they save. Those they pick up in the Channel they hand over to the Border Force for processing.

I know people are angry about these boat crossings but you absolutely can’t blame the RNLI. The numbers crossing the Channel are 40% down this year, those lodged in hotels are also substantially down, so current policies seem to be working.

The thing that has really shocked me is how individual volunteers are being named and targeted online. I would expect every single one of us to condemn that thuggish behaviour. But I may be too optimistic.
