| In a working class constituency someone like Burnham offering free stuff paid for by taxing the 'rich' may well get elected. But that doesn't make the policy right. In the first place it is never just the rich who are taxed. There aren't enough rich people to go round. It is the middle classes who will have to pay, many of them 'just managing in Theresa Nay's ohrase. Secondly higher taxation slows growth and actually reduces tax receipts over the long term. Andy Burnham is a professional northerner who gas courted popularity by sticking up for his region which he says has suffered discrimination at the hands of all the posh people down south. What's he going to do when instead of demanding largesse from London he will have to distribute it himself as prime minister? If he wins the by-election and becomes prime minister, I predict he will be a second Starmer, ditching all the stupid promises he made to get elected. |
