| I think it was me rather than Labour that was vague about the “re-set” promised for our relationship with the EU. They ruled out rejoining the customs union or the single market but that leaves plenty of scope to improve the terms of trade without upsetting too many of the dwindling number of hardline Brexiteers. Or possibly not. It’s difficult to prove where the economy might have been had we stayed in but most, possibly nearly all, economists judge the damage to run into the hundreds of billions since Johnson signed his botched deal with Brussels five years ago. I’ve certainly not seen any convincing evidence that our freedom to strike new trade deals anywhere has brought actual or projected gains that come anywhere near offsetting the costs of leaving. But, hey, democracy, sovereignty, beat everything including common sense and mathematics. |
