| Subtext - despite Brexit not because of Brexit. DM didn't explicitly say that but the tone (and their relief) is clear. The fact that the UK economy is proving so resilient is obviously good news but I continue to believe our long term trade prospects will not be helped by the barriers we have created between ourselves and our nearest neighbours who are still, despite Brexit, our largest trading partners (as a bloc). Also, those long supply lines to/from the Far East are self-evidently more vulnerable and as costs rise will tend to be inflationary. And it should be mentioned that our trade deficit is hugely negative: the UK recorded an overall trade deficit in 2022 of £87 billion – a trade surplus in services of £144 billion was more than outweighed by a trade deficit in goods of £231 billion. So, hold the euphoria. That trade deficit has to be paid for and it's getting bigger and bigger. |
