| This doesn't indicate that Brexit has been a success. Nearly all this growth has come from the services sector and that in turn is mainly in London. Although not being in the Single Market has caused problems for these industries, they are not on the same scale as for goods. Talk to anyone who works in the City of London and they'll tell you that, although Brexit was a terrible idea, the financial services industry has largely been able to adapt and limit the damage. We are the only major economy which has over 50% of exports in services so we are performing relatively compared to others which have a much larger manufacturing sector which has been hit by falling demand, high energy costs and competition from China. Just how bad our trade in goods has got due to the huge barriers imposed by leaving the Single Market is partly masked by us being an energy exporter and therefore benefiting from higher prices as well strong demand from the one area of manufacturing where we excel - arms. |
