Mr Higgins 'This doesn't indicate that Brexit has been a success. Nearly all this growth has come from the services sector and that in turn is mainly in London. Although not being in the Single Market has caused problems for these industries, they are not on the same scale as for goods'. I don't understand why the good performance from the 'service sector' of our economy seems to be poo-pooed. Surely it's money in the UK's bank account wherever it comes from. The days when we relied on metal bashing and digging stuff out of the ground are well past. And note Make UK's (the trade body for UK manufacturing) annual analysis of the latest manufacturing facts and statistics for 2023. 'With a significant jump in output to £224 billion, the UK has climbed from 9th to 8th place in the global manufacturing rankings, cementing its role as a key player in the industry'. In the main this is high tech manufacturing. And our prominence and skills in service industries, in this case IT, is the reason both Google and Meta (Facebook) have set up offices in London. It is Meta’s biggest engineering hub outside the US. But also important during 2022, fast-growing UK tech companies have continued to raise investment funds at near-record levels (£24 billion), more than France (£11.8 billion) and Germany (£9.1 billion) combined. This takes the total raised over the past five years to nearly £100 billion (£97 billion). And why the continual harping on about 'the City' ? If you believe that capitalism is a 'good thing' without which most of the world would be poorer, in all meanings of the word, then we ought to be pleased that a leading driver of such is in the UK. It earns the country billions, provides well paid tax raising jobs for thousands and supports numerous jobs in the hospitality industry for many more whose skills might only qualify them for such. Brexit: "been there, done that". Thank goodness we are now adapting to the world that is not the world we think it should be. |
