Richard Lo, from his description of the system operation, has had installed either a multisplit system or a heat pump VRV/VRF system, both of which operate 2-Pipe distribution meaning that the entire system can only be operated all in cooling or all in heating at any one time. If they were splits - i.e. one external condenser matched to one internal unit - then the internal units could operate in heating and cooling and simultaneously. The only other way to achieve simultaneous heating and cooling to the internal units would be to utilise a heat recovery heat pump system which operates with 3-Pipe distribution. Heat pumps are a great technology which have been developed for many years and continue to do so with the current focus on compressor and refrigerant gas technologies. Though with all such systems there are pros and cons in their application of which should be carefully considered against the environment that they are installed, end user requirements, and cap ex Vs running costs. A sweeping statement to say that heat pumps are the be all and end all of our countries energy and carbon issues is incorrect, as would be any sweeping statement, but heat pumps certainly have their place in moving us in the right direction providing that they are employed correctly and that the relevant support networks are in place to ensure their continued and safe operation in a residential application. |
