We have been looking at heat pumps as our boiler is getting old. This is the latest article my wife found - people describing with varying experiences with heat pumps:

My view is:

     
  1. The technology is relatively new and rapidly changing;
    2.  
  2. One needs to find an installer who has the knowledge and understanding of the technology to design an adequate system for one's property and competently install it;
    3.  
  3. Radiators and associated plumbing may need replacing;
    4.  
  4. Insulation and double glazing may need installing or upgrading;
    5.  
  5. Running costs will be reduced if electricity can be supplemented with solar panels;
    6.  
  6. Underfloor heating may be more appropriate if it can be easily installed;
    7.  
  7. In summary, the science is sound but it's the practical technology issues that are problematic particularly when fitting in older houses.
