There is a great blog on the ones in Bristol. I heard on More or Less this week on R4 that blue tits in the UK eat 35 billion - yes billion - caterpillars - and apparently that is considered the junk food of their diet. They also like spiders - and that must be why one was knocking at my window frame the other day. So you can why the weather is so important for them to have the right food available. Swifts, swallows and martins catch their insects on the wing and that's why we need to have plenty of flowering plants for insects to pollinate and feed on and avoid using insecticide. I understand that with the birds above the way that we are making our housing more energy efficient can be a problem for them. They return to their old nests. :( Sorry haven't seen any this year. https://www.bristolswifts.co.uk/ |
