It would be desperately sad if the double-deckers did disappear. They are such an icon for London as are black cabs (and ravens in the Tower of London?). I see the article mentions 42,000 Uber taxis, I thought the number was much higher than that. But still, one heck of a number to contribute to the congestion in London! The main problem with buses is not necessarily the size (are single deckers smaller than double deckers - in width terms?). We have all had a 1 1/2 horrific year, including public transport. Quite understandably, people avoided using it at all costs and, even now, many continue to avoid it. So, no wonder some buses were empty out of rush hour. Was it not the Tory government who cut down the subsidies for TfL not long ago? Pubic transport in the UK is horrifically expensive compared to other countries, eye-wateringly so. I think any decision of the kind, at the moment, would be quite suspect. PPE, track and trace contracts are some of the ones that come to mind and were, for all intents and purposes, quite suspect. More to follow regarding the replacement of double deckers? |
