Philippa, electric battery cars now seem suitable for day-to-day running around, shopping, commuting, etc subject to adequate charging places at home, work, shops, service areas and leisure facilities. However, they still have some limitations, mainly for commercial use; for example, London to Glasgow is just over 400 miles, in a Nissan with a c200 mile range with (I'm told by an owner) 6 hour charge that rules out doing it in a day (which I've done in the past with two people sharing the driving), and - with the extra power load required load for lorries - that's just not feasible. The answer for lorries is probably electric drive trains powered by fuel cells but development and infrastructure to refuel those with hydrogen seems to lags behind that for batteries. I'm sure if I'm out of date regarding this someone will correct me! |
