The pong of accumulated tons of horse dung must have been overwhelming. Pre Bazelgette and his sewage system parliament once had to suspend sittings thanks to the stench rising from the Thames. That was from human effluent and that hot summer was called the Great Stink. Not for nothing did Cobbett refer to London as the Great Wen.

We don’t know how lucky we are!  But the threat today is not so much bad smells but invisibly toxic air from all those motor vehicles. A problem we can solve with the political will.
