I think the point about tree-roots preventing bank erosion would apply where the bank is simply earth, as it is much further upstream on the Thames (out of London). However, on the stretch in question there are stone revetments. It's these which the tree-roots have a tendency to break up over time. Eventually you end up with a situation where individual blocks of the revetment are pushed loose and tumble into the river. Once there are gaps, the revetment is of course much more vulnerable to erosion by the river. I'm of the view that there's not really a conspiracy here, or indeed incompetence. |
