Jim, That is intriguing, and I bet very few people in Putney are aware of these details. What seems to be lacking, however, is any widespread community involvement. Perhaps it happens, but is simply not reported. In my childhood in a small Sussex town, we were twinned with a French town, and the benefits were enjoyed across the board. Thus during the summer holidays, children were exchanged with families in the other town. At other times of the year, there were football and rugby matches between the teams drawn from either side of the Channel. More recently, I have become aware of the Sister Cities organisation, which effectively twins an American city with a similar conurbation in a foreign country. (It is worth googling ' Sister Cities ' for further details). Putney simply does not seem to indulge in any such activities today; or, if it does, they are well hidden. As I see it, the museum now has a very valuable role to play in creating a sense of civic identity, through its history. There is a lovely description of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight RAF Lancaster, which comprises ' 50,000 rivets flying in loose formation '. Perhaps the same could be said of Putney? Lots of wonderful people around, but we never seem to get together in any meaningful sort of way. Yes, there is the Putney Society; yes, there is the Putney Music Society. But these both appeal to a comparatively narrow range of interests. The new museum is only yards away from the Putney boundary. How about those reading this thread meeting for lunch at the museum this coming Friday, 8 October? Since we collectively complained about the closure of the old museum, we could collectively get the new museum going by injecting a little bit of cash, buying lunch, and putting faces to familiar names. And putting the world to rights! Incidentally, the 170 bus also passes the museum, as well as the 37 and the 337, serving as it does West hill, and Roehampton via the Green Man. |
