Simon, we are to an extent in uncharted water.  There are plenty of local museums around the country which survive perfectly well, mostly on a modest scale and with local council support in one form or another.  There are even a few around London - both Richmond and Wimbledon have small museums, for example.

The new Wandsworth Museum will be in a different league, though.  Firstly it has a decent sized site and secondly about £1M has been spent on converting the building to the highest standards (eg LED lighting throughout, at a saving of 90% over conventional lighting costs) and preparing both permanent and temporary exhibition space.  I haven't seen it yet but those who have have been bowled over by its scope and ambition.  This will be more than just a local history museum and has a good chance of becoming a destination in its own right - certainly Wandsworth needs something like that.

When the council decided to close the old Wandsworth Museum in 2006 a lot of people objected strongly, and campaigned against it.  A petition of about 22,000 signatures was handed it, but ignored.

The strength of feeling and the number of people who suported the campaign persuaded us that a local museum in Wandsworth had a future.  And crucially it also persuaded the Hintze Foundation to donate £2M to fund the relocation and reopening of the museum, plus its running costs for an estimated five years.

Whether it will ultimately be able to stand on its own feet financially is the difficult bit.  If the local community supports it by visiting regularly, providing volunteers to help run it and keep costs down, and spreading the word that a major new cultural and community resource has been created, then we stand a fighting chance.  I doubt personally that the museum will survive on entry fees alone - as you point out, many museums have unrestricted free entry - but it will be getting grants and sponsorship, it will make something from renting out its space for functions, there will be one-off events which should also raise money, there is a cafe and a shop, etc etc.

Having said all that I suspect we will continue to need the Hintzes' money for years to come and while the Friends will contribute to fundraising (are YOU a Friend??) I cannot see us doing more than funding specific projects, rather as the Friends of Putney School of Art & Design did for their recent extension.  There is a natural limit to people's generosity in these straitened times. We (the Friends) are raising money for the lavender garden in front of the building - and we have already contributed towards the costs of acquiring a 17th century gold ring found in the Thames mud as well as the Beatrix Potter Evacuation Re-enactment project.

So give it a chance.  And bring the kids along - Cyril the Pike awaits them in his tank with other freshwater fish from the River Wandle (unless he's eaten them of course ...)
