| We have a house in Germany - over there the law says you are responsible for clearing the pavement outside your house; if someone slips over you are liable. Consequently everyone keeps the pavement spotless. I think the reason people don't clear in the UK is because of the reason you gave - if you don't clear it and someone slips, it is an act of god, whereas if you clear it and someone slips they can sue you. The council should offer a blanket indemnity for all householders and encourage everyone to clear their stretch of pavement. They should also reinstate grit boxes so that local people can chuck grit where it is needed. |
