Some good news:  today's press release from from the Council (too late for summer though) Riverside drinks at the Duke's Head Customers of the Duke's Head pub in Putney will be able to enjoy a drink next to the riverside after brewery chiefs formally applied for changes to their licence to allow drinks to be taken outside. Patrons of the Duke's Head have for many years taken their drinks on to Putney Embankment, which has traditionally been a popular open air drinking spot. However, when the pub applied for a new licence in 2006, as they were legally required to under the Government's new licensing laws, its bosses failed to secure the necessary permissions that allowed drinks to be taken outside. This has meant that in recent months, the pub has had to stop customers taking drinks outside or else risk breaching the terms of its licence. But this popular Putney tradition can now continue after pub chiefs last week successfully applied to the town hall to vary its licence to allow outside drinking. Under the new rules, no drinks served at the pub can be consumed outside after 11.20pm between Monday and Saturday and after 11pm on Sundays, and drinks can only be taken outside if they have been served in plastic containers. Customers will also be encouraged to come inside from 10.30pm to ensure that the outside areas are cleared of drinkers by the specified deadline. Chairman of the licensing sub-committee Cllr Stewart Finn said: "We have reached a sensible compromise which we hope will satisfy local residents, especially the pub's close neighbours, and those customers who have for many years enjoyed this popular riverside spot. "We have agreed that people can take their drinks outside but we've imposed strict rules that are designed to guarantee that noise disturbance for local residents is kept to a minimum. "It is now incumbent on the pub and its staff to ensure that none of its customers are drinking outside after 11.20pm." ENDS
