They obviously have a desire to destabilise western societies and spread Islam world wide. They do this by exaggerating the 'oppression' Palestinians and western Muslims suffer, seeking sympathy and support within such groups and from their non-Muslim fellow travellers. And by more direct means of street killing. Whether Russia played a major role is far more doubtful. Look at what they were accused of doing to assist the UK Brexit campaign.
