| Mr Hawkes You ask “Are you happy with the immigration situation as it stands and if not, what do you think should be done to better control it ?” No of course I’m not happy with the situation. The arrival of so many undocumented people (mostly but not all young males) is obviously a huge concern to nearly everyone, though I personally believe some of the reactions are quite hysterical. On the other hand, we do not know who these asylum seekers really are (and they all, or nearly all, claim asylum as soon as they land). I have read that Iran may have infiltrated a few IRGC operatives so we can only hope they are being weeded out. But simply demonising all those on the boats is wrong too. They are, in the main, fleeing civil war and turmoil in their home countries. They are desperate and probably traumatised. Of course some are purely economic migrants but jumping automatically to the worst conclusion does not help, and some politicians do nothing but encourage that, without evidence of course. Ugly and divisive in my view. The self-styled “patriots” are quite frankly a blot on society that we should all be ashamed of. What sort of image do they convey of this country? I have just been reading of the close links some Reform councillors have with the “Patriotic Platform” run by a former bodyguard of Tommy Robinson, and, by no coincidence at all, also a convicted criminal. What should be done? I wish I had the answers but it seems, whether we like it or not, working with our neighbours across the Channel is the only way forward. Crossings this year are 41% down on the year before but, if the BBC article in the link below (sorry, Sue) is right, then the reasons lie not just with the actions of this and previous governments, but developments much further afield. So it could change for the worse again. The “solution” offered by Reform of deploying the Royal Navy is frankly illegal (under international law) and unworkable. We simply can’t send our navy uninvited into French waters and they certainly won’t be issuing an invitation. And towing the boats back only as far as the edge of French waters and leaving them there is highly dangerous, inhuman in fact, and also illegal. I could see the navy simply refusing to do that. So international cooperation is the only way. Crack down collectively on the gangs, crack down on the suppliers of boats and engines, crack down on the facilitators here in the UK. All this is happening but it’s a long hard battle. Let us remind ourselves how all this started: Brexit and the imperfect withdrawal agreement that saw us exiting the Dublin Agreement whereby we could, pre-Brexit, just send them back, as France could with illegals entering France from Italy.
