| I most certainly do not agree with Dale Vince’s statement, accurately described as ‘repugnant’ by Lord Walney,, the former counter extremism tsar, and condemned by Wes Streeting last night. Dale Vince fondly imagines that he has exonerated himself from a charge of anti-Semitism by adding the disclaimer ‘I condemn all acts of violence and all forms of racism’. But his statement was offensive and stupid in equal measure: 1) It was entirely inappropriate to make any kind of political statement in the immediate aftermath of a horrible pogrom when people are still mourning the loss of their loved ones. 2) He appears to blame Israel rather than the perpetrators themselves for the massacre, a perverse and wicked interpretation. 3) He clearly equates the death of Palestinian civilians, the unintended victims of a campaign to eliminate the threat from an army of genocidal fanatics who deliberately shelter behind the local population, with the cold-blooded execution of ordinary Jewish people celebrating Chanukah on a beach in Australia. 4) He mindlessly repeats the baseless blood libel of genocide against Israel. 5) He ignores the fact the Jews are probably the most persecuted religious and racial group in history. |
