| Jonathan, if you read my post carefully, you will see that I did not suggest that 'anyone who criticises Israel's actions in Gaza is somehow excusing these horrors'. Indeed the opposite is generally true. The bien pensant critics of Israel on the Forum frequently take pains to express their condemnation of Hamas and bristle with righteous indignation at the imagined slur that they condone acts of terrorism against Israel. I have never accused any contributors to the Forum of being Hamas supporters and I am bemused by their constant need to protest that they are not. My objection is to armchair moralists sitting in the safety of Putney who condemn Israel's attempts to eradicate threats to its existence from its neighbours - from Iran, a potential nuclear power which believes that Israel should be wiped off the map, from Hezbollah whose rockets rained down on Norther Israel for years and from Hamas, a genocidal 40 000 strong terrorist organisation which carried out an appalling pogrom on October 7. While Israel, like any other nation, should not be immune from criticism, there is no justification whatever for the false and vicious accusation of genocide (repeated on the Forum) which more than anything else has fostered a climate of anti-Semitism. |
