Roland. I'm not clear on the point you're trying to make about Phythagoras - irrespective of whether it was devised by him and when, I can(or could at one time :-)) prove the theory is true for the realm of mathematics in which I used it. Also, Dawking's Selfish Gene is based again on a scientific theory, so might only be true in the extent of the world it is related to but seems reasonably in line with evolution theory (I don't think the term "selfish" should be taken too literally but again it's a while since I read it). So I don't consider them anything to do with faith. Faith in a religion is a personal belief: in my opinion many people believe because they are brainwashed by their parents and community, others who aren't sure probably hedge their bets in line with Pascal's wager, some use it as a crutch because they can't cope with life and there are some that have some reason for truly believing in their God. Personally I've never seen any evidence that would convince me a god exists and have nothing in my family background that would influence me to believe that one exists; hence, I'm an atheist. |
