Mr Ixer

Re Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

'Every five years, the European Council - made up of EU heads of state and government - proposes a candidate for the President of the European Commission to the European Parliament.

The candidate for President is proposed based on the political make-up of the Parliament following the European elections; typically, they will be chosen from the largest political family in the Parliament.

If an absolute majority of members of Parliament support the nominee, he or she is elected'.

So individuals were never given a direct vote in her appointment and she and the Commission she heads wielded enormous power over how countries and citizens of such conducted themselves.

She seems to be pretty much a career politician; first in Germany and then the EU.

Peter Mandelson served as the European Commissioner for Trade from 2004 to 2008, where he played a significant role in shaping EU trade policy and negotiating international trade agreements.

Note also that in 2024, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate for the US was recorded at 2.8%, while the EU experienced a growth rate of 1.1% as did the UK.

Best for the Labour Party's new leader facing a pretty flat economy to cosy up to the Donald - don't you think ? 😉
