Not an excuse, but a reminder of a bit of the context surrounding the Mandelson appointment; possibly the main reason Starmer chose Mandy was that Trump was the President. He probably thought that Mandelson could manage Trump in ways that would benefit the UK. It is not an unreasonable or crazy assumption. I am sure Starmer knew there were huge risks attached to Mandelson, but there are huge risks with whoever is UK ambassador to the US while Trump is in charge.
Had Biden still been President, or if Kamal Harris won, Mandelson would have been nowhere near Washington.
