Having been to a talk recently about the conditions in Wandsworth Prison it doesn't surprise me that this happens. The atmosphere must be difficult for staff as well as prisoners (more then half who are on remand prisoners, so technically still innocent), so perhaps not the environment for working in and maintaining accuracy? I read somewhere prisons are losing staff as a proportion are immigrants and under the new salary caps for visas they're going home as they no longer qualify for work in the UK - oh well, it'll only get worse if all the immigrants go home ... Lammy did get angry - perhaps he'd only just been told, but didn't know at that point they weren't asylum seekers? I suppose it's unreasonable to fix something in 18 months that been allowed to deteriorate over 14 years? |
