I think it is a bit the same with both bikes and cars.  It is more of a problem if you own something that is particularly expensive and special and coveted by others.  We once inherited an office Golf GTi.  We didn't like it very much but we certainly didn't realise that it was something that the boy racers all seemed to want.  It was a problem and worry from the moment we took it over.  First it was the radio before we realised it could be removed and before it had been replaced it was broken into again, then there was the morning we found it wheel-less and sitting on bricks and then eventually one morning the conversation was "Where did we park the car last night?" "Underneath the lamp-post."  "Oh, I thought so."  It was actually a bit of a relief not worrying about it any more and getting up every time we heard the slightest noise in the street.  It is such a hassle every time you have to sort out break-ins and thefts etc... but you need to as not doing anything unfortunately encourages more.
