Black for me. I watched Nick Robinson’s prog on BBC4 last night, obviously recorded before the referendum but still a very useful reminder of the long process of getting into the Common Market and how the debate even then focused on loss of sovereignty versus trading benefits. Amongst those most concerned about the sovereignty issue were two very strange political bedfellows, Tony Benn and Enoch Powell. The notion that joining what is now the EU might enhance and magnify our influence on the world stage, never mind in Europe, passed too many people by, then and now. I fear we will have to learn painful lessons in the coming years about how illusory the apparent regaining of total sovereignty will be before any realistic reassessment takes place. |
