The issues in the Gulf (Persian or Arabian) have been ongoing for years. Having visited Iran, I can think of few nations that mourn the loss of empire so greatly, still referencing Alexander the Great, where only a few miles of water separate those with long and bitter memories, and the culture of Taarof would make the simplest of negotiations extremely difficult. The Strait of Hormuz (from which the expression to "Go round the bend" emanates) is literally the most important and sensitive trade route on earth. Any blockade would have very serious repercussions for the World, not just in terms of oil, but petroleum by-products, not least those vital for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Without any blockade, the oil price has rocketed and US stocks are up. The Wall Street bankers are happy, and so is the Military Industrial Complex. Much of the evidence here is contradictory, and bears a striking similarity to the Gulf of Tonkin incident, where long-standing maritime conflicts, with interference from the US, escalated into the Vietnam war. We are all praying for peace in this beautiful region. Hong Kong is also about to be crushed by another super-power, which is heart-breaking to watch. As one of the activists said whilst in tears, Hong Kong belongs to the World. |
