One of the points I noticed in these threads was that one of the problems was caused by certain individuals calling out to female pedestrians and intimidating them. Given all the prominence given recently to Hate Awareness Week, and suggestions that even wolf whistling should be considered as a hate crime, I just wonder why the police are not onto it, as a hate related crime is clearly being committed. Could be that Hate Awareness Week is just another political stunt where the police are not given the resources to implement the various policies? I also saw the comment that the public often resist police attempts to move these people on, but I just wonder if any of those attempts involved those who were just sitting there minding their own business and not causing trouble to anyone (which I have seen for myself and objected to) at Waterloo Station. Perhaps what Is missing is the actual surveillance to ensure that when people are being intimidated, action can be taken then. I suspect there would then be less resistance from the public to attempts to deal with the situation. Of course this is a naive suggestion and I know that. |
