David, as a remainer I would say you are quite wrong in that not all leavers are either thick or arrogant - they, some of them, have a point of view which should be listened too - but the same is true of those who voted to remain - they too have a point of view which should be listened too. The vote was incredibly close and was not an overwhelming endorsement to quit the EU, and it was not a binding vote either - it was advisory as is clear in the legislation which enabled the vote to take place in the first place. Ours is a representational democracy, which means it is for Parliament to discuss and come to final decisions which affect the nation - and the absolute duty of each and every back-bench MP is threefold: to represent us, legislate on our behalf, and hold the government to account - all of which is missing in the manner the tories are conducting affairs, and in large measure too the official opposition. What is becoming progressively clear as each day passes are the consequences of leaving the EU, and for the health of the nation and our democracy the yar-boo hecking on each side needs to stop and be replaced with sober debate and with ears wide open - there is of course a huge difference between listening and hearing, and its listening to each others point of view which is important - we will all of us have to live with the final consequences will we not? |
