Actually, things are a bit more complicated than that: in the 1950s pollution was very bad, to the extent that in 1957 the Thames was declared biologically dead. But then improvements were made and the water cleaned up so that many fish returned. But then it all went downhill again with privatisation so that we reach the filthy state the river is in now.
