| Actually, I've revised my opinion on this somewhat, having read this report: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2024/mar/27/a-national-disgrace-oxford-rail-at-river-thames-pollution-ahead-of-boat-race It shows a much worse picture than before: high levels of E coli were found in the Thames; symptoms of infection with E coli include diarrhoea, stomach cramps and occasionally fever. About half of people with the infection will have bloody diarrhoea. In a small number of cases it can lead to kidney failure and death. This is rare: but who would want to take that risk? The Environment Agency's worst rating of E coli levels found in bathing waters is “poor” ("water has not met the minimum standard" and bathing in it is warned against) but levels found in the Thames were nearly ten times higher than that - hence the real concern over the Boat Race. |
