- It probably is pioneering for Putney but perhaps not in the way you anticipate, John.
This is because the developer’s “investment in renewable energy” is more likely a cashing in on government subsidies – which the rest of us will have to pay for via higher energy bills.
This is because, thanks to government renewable energy strategy, utility companies will be obliged to accept the delivery of power from this developer’s wind turbine – and be forced to pay a premium for the minimal energy the turbine produces.
As such, it’ll be you, me and every other energy user that’ll likely be investing in this developer’s renewable energy - via energy companies paying over the odds for his turbine’s energy and passing the cost onto the rest of us.

This is due to electricity ‘micro-generation’ via such wind turbines (and solar panels) being central to the UK’s renewable energy strategy over the next 10 years.
Given this strategy will rely on tariffs where energy companies pay a premium for electricity produced by such turbines, however, the system’s deeply flawed, likely to cause high electricity costs and have minimal net impact on reduced carbon emissions, employment, innovation and energy security.
The system also forces those of us who can’t afford such turbines to subsidise those who can.
The last government’s policy in this regard kicked off in April and was based on a 2% target of UK electricity micro-generation by 2020. The subsidy to reach this target would’ve likely been around £80 billion – to be paid for by consumers and businesses via higher energy bills (over £1,300 for every man, woman and child in the UK).
Under the Conservatives, however, the planned target was up to 15% of UK electricity via micro-generation by 2020 - meaning subsidies of up to £600 billion (or an £1,000 extra for every man, woman and child in the UK, every year for the next decade).
I dunno what the current coalition’s plans are for micro-generation but, given plans prior to the election, the system was a rip-off favouring the wealthier over the poorer – and this developer seems canny enough to want to cash in on another bubble.
So, if we do have to “get used” to such turbines, would you be kind enough to pay my family’s share of the bill please?
