Nice idea - you tell the neighbourhood what stuff you have that you are willing to lend out, in exchange for the opportunity to borrow things. Unfortunately, as the owner of a lot of tools and equipment (carefully saved up for, and bought over many years) my experience of lending to neighbours is pretty negative - I quickly realised that everyone knew I had all the right tools and made no attempt ever to buy anything for themselves - they were all my best friends for the ten minutes it took to borrow stuff, then I never heard from them until the next time. When my long ladder was returned damaged I became a lot more circumspect about lending it out. After lots of disillusionment I now lend only to very good friends that have a history of returning favours. |
